New Vehicle Pre-Registration Process

Starting September 1, 2024, whether you’re buying from a dealership or a private seller, Oklahomans will have ten days from the date of sale to get a metal license plate and pre-registration decals on a recently purchased vehicle. Oklahomans will also have two months from the date of sale to fully register their vehicle.

Key Points of the New Pre-Registration Process:

  • Two Business Days: You have two business days from the date of purchase to pre-register your vehicle.
  • Ten Days to Attach Tags: After pre-registration, you have ten days from the purchase date to receive and attach your metal license plate with pre-registration decals.
  • Two Months for Full Registration: You still have two months from the purchase date to fully register your vehicle and pay any applicable sales and excise taxes at Classen Tag Agency or another licensed operator location..
  • Exemption: This new process only applies to vehicles purchased on or after September 1, 2024. The following vehicles are exempt from pre-registration: ATV/UTV, boats and outboard motors, commercial trailers, farm trailers, construction machinery, and private trailers.

Three Simple Steps to Vehicle Registration:

  1. Pre-Register Your Motor Vehicle
The dealer will initiate the pre-registration process in a commercial sale or by the buyer or seller may initiate it in a private sale.
  2. Place Pre-Registration Decals on Your Motor Vehicle
You’ll receive two pre-registration decals and, if needed, a metal license plate in the mail. A metal license plate and the two pre-registration decals should be affixed to the plate on your newly purchased vehicle within ten days of the sale to indicate the vehicle information has been sent to the state but has not yet been fully registered.
  3. Register Your Motor Vehicle
After pre-registration, you still have two months from the date of purchase to obtain the title, pay sales and excise tax, and fully register the vehicle. Full vehicle registrations can be completed at Classen Tag Agency or another licensed operator location. The receipt of registration must be kept in the vehicle at all times.
